The Voronezh-DM is an energy-efficient, long-range surveillance radar designed to track ballistic missiles at ranges of up to 4,000 kilometers. Armavir, in Krasnodar region Southern Russia, is the first site equipped with the Voronezh-DM radar system.
It was put on combat duty on February 26, 2009, replacing early warning radar sites in Mukachevo and Sevastopol, both in Ukraine. It is expected to go fully operational in October/November 2009. A second radar was set into experimental service at Lekhtoussi site, near Saint-Petersburg, in March 2006 and will achieve operational capability within 2009 with the Russian Strategic Forces.
